Where Are The Ads?

A lot of questions regarding the monetization of AlleNation have been asked lately, why am I not currently monetizing it, what are my monetization plans, and why would I want to promote and invest in a blog that is not currently monetized.

To answer these we have to go back to the aim behind starting and establishing AlleNation, and then talk about the business characteristics that should be taken into consideration when monetizing a blog with an audience of thinking readers (I’m lucky!).

So Why Was it Started..?

This post may end up pretty long, so I’ll try to keep things in bullet-points instead of paragraphs, here are the 3 main reasons for starting AlleNation: (ordered by significance)

1. A place to ramble, rant and keep track of my progress - Yes, you will find some valuable and useful articles here, but that is just a derivative of my will to share the experience I’ve gained through out time. This place is -after all- my home ground for rambling, ranting and telling the world exactly what I think and how I feel about whatever comes into my mind.

2. Sharing, networking, learning - Something I realized after this blog started receiving serious traffic amounts was the relationships I could form with other business and blogging enthusiasts. I believe that connecting with the right people (not at any price though) can be very beneficial for both your brain and your pocket1.

3. Making money - Although advertising will never be a must and keeping it ad-free is a possibility, I’m not going to lie and say it hasn’t crossed my mind, but I’m not jumping on it so early on. Here’s why:

I Don’t Want an Typical Average Business

The absolute majority of businesses fail, I think the last time I read about it the ratio between successful and failing businesses was 1:12. One of the reasons for that is people coming from the employment to the business section carrying the same fundamentals from their old job, or simply lack of experience. (remember that experience will translate into success eventually)

Success in blogging isn’t very different than success in business if that’s what you want your blogs to be. Yet we see many people starting a blog, trying to make money first, and only then try to make it valuable2. Sorry, that isn’t going to work.

Since I don’t want my odds for success to be 1:12, I’ve decided AlleNation is going to provide you value first, only after building creditability and trust between myself and the readers advertising talk will be relevant.

One thing I am sure about is that I’m never going to aggressively place ads on this blog, never going to sell you something I don’t sincerely believe in, and if/when ads are sold - It’s going to be done in quite a special way.

1: Networking and how it helped me from ‘The Myth We Need to Dispel’ [AlleNation]
2: On greed and speed [I Will Teach You To Be Rich]

Great post. I totally agree with you on the ads part and waiting until your blog is more established

I agree with you about the ads. I sell simple blog post sponsorships, but they are not invasive and are really simple. It makes me some small money while my sites are growing, money that I can use to help my small sites grow. However, putting adsense on my personal blog is something I don’t see myself ever doing.

My blog also doesnt have any ads.
The reason being that I dont think the amount I would be earning from something like Adsense if worth littering my website with ads.
Instead I just sold some links for my blog sidebar.
I also didnt put ads, as I dont really treat blogging as a business. I used to post stuff in various forums anyway, so decided to put them together in a website.

I AGREE WITH YOU TOO.

Hmmm…I could maybe learn something here.

Thanks for the rebuke Allen.

I feel that it all depend what is the purpose of your blog. To me blogging can earn some profits but not alot compare to other online business model. To me blog is a very good tool to build credibility and networking with other like minded people.

Personally I know quite a lot of friends through blogging.
