My Best Earner

After a forced hiatus I’m slowly getting back into my normal routine and hopefully the new features for March should be up soon. Today I want to talk about something everybody has been asking about: my best earner.

Over the last 3 months I’ve been reading a lot of questions and even complaints in the comments about the fact I don’t “share” my biggest earner, some have even tried to claim that I’m faking my earnings in various funny ways.

Well first to be clear: I don’t think a blogger’s authority or insight is worth more just because he makes more money than the average blogger, there are a lot of people out there that make little money but have good insight and advice, from the other hand - many of these that are making a lot of money aren’t worth listening to.

If you’re reading this blog only because I have a decent online income, you’re invited to come here at the start of each month for 10 minutes and then leave.

My Best Earner

This post will not detail anything about my best earner, neither would it try to offer any explanations why it’s not publicly mentioned, I don’t owe these explanations to anyone; I’m simply going to tell what is the interest behind my discretion - It’s not fraud clicking and it’s not copycat worries..

It’s called branding; remember when I said being a brand is one of the best attributes a blog can have, it wouldn’t be too fair of me not to practice what I preach right?

A while ago I read an interview with Jeremy Schoemaker, among the questions was one about branding his websites despite not mentioning or “claiming” them publicly.

I can’t find that interview right now but Schoemaker hits the head of the nail with his answer when he says that if you really want to have a brand, you’ve got to give your blog/site/business it’s own entity.

Look at all the really big money making sites on the net, are any of them being mentioned as “somebody’s website” or just by their names? take Egotastic!, TechEBlog & Boing Boing as examples, any names attached to these?

Take a moment and think what if your personal blog with all your sites mentioned in it became hugely popular in a year or two, are you sure you want your name tied to every blog you manage?

I think I might know what your other website is. I’m not sure though, it’s probably not… Anyways, It’s not biggie to me, I enjoy reading your posts :D Keep up the great work

I see a branding issue if you’ve got all of your websites interlinked in some way, but on my personal blog I’ve got a list there in case anyone is interested. My blog is geared towards web developers and the like, so I think it’s probably useful for some people to get a better idea when I write about something.

At the same time, however, it’d be a little nuts to the link all of the other sites that are totally unrelated to each other. That’s definately something you’d want to avoid, for obvious reasons.

In summary, I still don’t see how saying you manage XXX is a branding issue, but to each his own. 8)

Good Point Allen !

Yeah, I see where you’re coming from.

personally
i see what you mean
but i am too conceited to not publicize what i own
plus i do not believe in keeping things from people

Maybe when you’re unknown, but think about the unnecessary risk you’re taking if your personal blog suddenly gets huge amounts of traffic.

@broc: I don’t think I’m “keeping things from people” with not sharing my other commercial sites, I’ve said this before and I will say it again - There are no secrets here, the blog is a very simple looking entertainment blog that gets decent amounts of traffic due to it’s content. I think that’s the only thing you need to know about it in order to have a success with your own.

Cheers,
Allen
